YAY - it's a long weekend but ...

Have you ever really thought about what Martin Luther King Jr. did in his lifetime?

He was the second child to Martin Luther King, Sr. and his wife Alberta Williams, and was born in Atlanta in 1929.  He married Coretta Scott in June of 1953.  They have four children.

Dr. King was a crucial figure in the Civil Rights Movement. He was elected President of the Montgomery Improvement Association, the organization that was responsible for the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott from 1955 to 1956 (381 days). He was arrested thirty times for his participation in civil rights activities.

Dr. King was shot while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN on April 4, 1968. Dr. King was in Memphis to help lead sanitation workers in a protest against low wages and intolerable working conditions. James Earl Ray was arrested in London, England on June 8, 1968, and returned to Memphis, Tennessee on July 19, 1969 to stand trial for the assassination of Dr. King. On March 9, 1969, before coming to trial, he entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to ninety-nine years in the Tennessee State Penitentiary.

http://www.mlkday.gov/ is promoting a day of service on Monday.  Dr. King devoted his life’s work to causes of equality and social justice. He taught that through nonviolence and service to one another, problems such as hunger and homelessness, prejudice and discrimination can be overcome. Dr. King’s dreams and hard work can continue to inspire  us in facing our nation’s most pressing needs---poverty, economic insecurity, job loss and education.

Take a second and read or listen to his speech "I had a Dream" http://www.mlkonline.net/speeches.html - and let him inspire you to get involved and make a difference in someones life.
