Why is it so hard to understand?

The movie (The Blind Side) based on Baltimore Ravens player Michael Oher has been in the news for the last couple of weeks in Maryland.  Movie reviewers are in shock at how much money the film has brought in - over $34 million dollars.  Movie critics have given the movie an average of a C+. Movie goers have given it an A.

The movie is about a once homeless boy who is from a broken home.  He is taken in by a well-to-do family who help him fulfill his potential. At the same time, the boys presence in the familys lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own. Living in his new environment, the teen faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome.

Why is it so difficult to understand why people want to spend the money to see this movie?  It's an american pick me up classic.  Against all odds a homeless boy becomes a NFL All-American offensive left tackle.

This country is in a tough stage right now, the economy is in the toilet, people are working 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet AND 10% of our population are still without a job (ask the guy at the grocery store a few weeks ago)!  I won't bring up the health care debate, Afghanistan, the shootings in Seattle, the conviction of the Baltimore mayor for stealing gift cards from the poor (but she wears a fur to court!), or the Fort Hood massacre.

Why don't they get that people are ok with spending $10 (ouch) for a little time to escape from these realities and maybe walk out of a theater to feel inspired to do something to change their life or someone elses?
