The U.S. Postal Service is contemplating dropping Saturday delivery and raising the cost of sending mail to scale back massive expenses.
The agency was $297 million in the red in period from October through December, usually its best season because of holiday mailings (we love to send those holiday cards and packages). Did you know that the post office does not receive a taxpayer subsidy for its operations? (phew - another bail out we can avoid!)
I have a friend who is a postal carrier and has been for close to twenty years. She works her TAIL off. Her route is pretty big and she's definitely putting in over 50 hours a week just getting her regular route done. There are times I see her delivering mail at 5pm and I know she was in the post office sorting items at 8am that morning.
I say let them work Monday thru Friday - give them the weekends off to spend time with their families. I don't mind waiting for my bills (the ones that I can't do electronically) a couple more days - just please make sure my People Magazine still arrives on Friday :)
Let them have Saturday off!
