Kids in the air traffic control tower

What in the world was he thinking??

There is an article out today stating that the FAA is suspending a man and his supervisor after the first man brought his kids to work and allowed  them to give talk off commands to pilots leaving JFK airport.

Some of the pilots think it was pretty funny - others not so much.  The FAA certainly doesn't.  "This lapse in judgment not only violated FAA's own policies, but common-sense standards for professional conduct. These kinds of distractions are totally unacceptable," FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt said in a statement. "This kind of behavior does not reflect the true caliber of our work force."

I'm not a pilot - nor do I claim to be one on TV, but - I think I would be a little nervous about little people being in the control tower at any airport never mind JFK (one of the busiest in the world).

What if some buttons were pushed that weren't suppose to be pushed?  We know how kids are - they're curious.  This could have been a national crisis with jets in the air if something like that happened.

Think of how surprised those pilots were when they heard a small child giving instructions - my first thought would have been, are you for real?  Can I trust this voice?

Radio transmissions between air traffic controllers and pilots are routinely streamed live on the Internet.  Here's one popular Web site devoted to controller talk, LiveATC.net.

Over and out.
