Turning 40

The 30's were great - from what I can remember.  I completed my bachelors degree and got my master's degree.  Sold my house.  Was involved in PTA on many different levels where I met some great friends. Started a summer swim team. I traveled all over the world with C and stayed relatively healthy.

I decided a few weeks before my 40th birthday that the year of my 40th birthday was going to be about me. Yes me. Totally selfish I know, but I have spent the last 15+ years of my life putting other people (including my child) before me.  Not that putting C before me is a bad thing, that's what parents do but when you're raising a child on your own, you tend to put yourself on the back burner that's really far away because you have to step up double time.

I signed up for a two week trial at a local womens gym.  They do mostly classes, some weight training and there's a weight loss program, B12 shots, tanning and child care if you need it. The classes are all at different times during the day and into the evening so there is no excuse for me not to go.  I went to a couple the first weeks and liked it. I truly liked it. My muscles didn't but I did.  So - I made a commitment. To me.

This year is going to be full of challenges and change for C.  C is going to be entering her senior year in high school, joining a new year round swim team, applying to college, going to senior prom, GRADUATING and then leaving for college.   She's grown into an independent young woman who is moving into the next phase of her life. My job is to guide her at this point because let's face it, if she can't live on her own or make a decision on her own right now with everything she's been taught at 17 I've screwed up somewhere.

So - it's all about me.  I've given myself a time frame to lose weight (which my doctor has been on me about for over a year to do - he doesn't give me any sympathy that it took me 17+  years to gain it all the bugger).  By April, I will lose 50 pounds properly. That gives me plenty of time to lose the weight, become discouraged and fall off the wagon, climb back on and keep going. I have to weigh in once a month with my trainer so I'll let you know how I'm doing - good or bad.

My plan is 4-5 classes a week of cardio and 1-2 classes a week of strength training.  I've already informed my trainer that I am going to eat what I want because I am not a junk food eater and I will eat a banana (barf) every morning and a small yogurt (double barf) every other day.

So here we go - put your sneakers and deodorant on, we're going on a journey of the 40th year.
