Christmas Cookies and why we love them...

Who doesn't love Christmas cookies?

Did you know that sugar once sold for the equivalent of $100.00 a pound? And that flour was a far more essential kitchen item in households where people literally had to bake bread and biscuits everyday for basic sustenance?

Why cookies, specifically? No one really knows. Cookies are just a form of small cake, with the conveniece of being handheld and quick to bake. The German traditions that led to Christmas cookies included ''Lebkuchen'' and ''Spritz'' recipes that used less sugar and more spices like cinnimon, cloves, and nutmeg--cheaper and easier to get than sugar was--as well as raisins and other dried fruits.

People love to bake cookies during the season to share with friends and family.  But why is it those bakers don't weigh 500 pounds?  Example, my uncle Michael.  He posted on his FB page last week that he made 381 cookies! (I'm not sure how the 1 made it out alive, I would have eaten it to make it an even 380) and he's still baking.  He's tall and thin and doesn't seem to gain a pound.  Some of us on the other hand, gain 10 pounds just looking at them.

I've decided that we love them because we all make something different and you can eat them with coffee, tea, milk and hot chocolate.  You see - there's a drink for everyone of them.  How perfect! Not to mention you can pop one in your mouth without being caught - unlike something that requires a plate and fork :)

Well - I'm off.  You guessed it, to make cookies.   Now do I chose the white chocolate/cranberry or chocolate/butterscotch??  (notice they both involve chocolate!)
